Start with the load, not the catalog
Every lifting equipment failure we've been called in to look at traces back to the same root cause: someone specified gear to the job's average load instead of its worst case. Working load limit (WLL) numbers assume a straight, vertical, steady lift — not a side-load, a snatch lift, or a rope running over a worn sheave. Before opening a catalog, get the actual worst-case load, the lift geometry, and the duty cycle in writing.
This is where a lot of budgets get spent in the wrong place. A cheaper hoist rated exactly to your load looks like a saving on paper. In practice, it leaves no margin for wear, misuse, or an unplanned side-pull — and that margin is what keeps a lift crew safe on a bad day, not a good one.
Match the gear to the environment, not just the load
Offshore and marine lifting equipment has to survive salt spray, vibration, and limited maintenance access — which is why we manufacture our own hydraulic vibratory hammers and marine hoisting systems rather than sourcing generic industrial units and hoping they hold up. Corrosion-resistant coatings, sealed bearings, and accessible grease points aren't upsells on marine gear; they're what determines whether the unit is still certifiable at its next inspection.

Onshore construction lifting has a different failure mode: dust, uneven ground, and gear that gets dragged between sites rather than maintained in place. Chain blocks and lever hoists in that environment need accessible chain inspection points and enclosed gearing more than they need extra capacity.
Build the inspection interval into the spec, not just the shipment
A lifting device is only as reliable as its most recent inspection. Wire rope in particular degrades in ways that aren't visible from the outside — internal wire breaks and loss of metallic area accumulate under the outer strands long before a rope looks worn. That's why magnetic flux leakage (MFL) testing exists as a category of equipment in its own right, and why ISO 4309 sets inspection intervals rather than leaving it to judgment.
If you're speccing lifting equipment for a site that will run it hard, ask what the inspection interval looks like in practice — who does it, with what equipment, and how the findings get logged — before you ask about price. The equipment that's cheapest to buy is rarely the equipment that's cheapest to keep certified.
What we'd tell a buyer before they sign
- Get the true worst-case load and lift geometry in writing before selecting a WLL, not after.
- Spec corrosion protection and sealed components for any lift gear operating offshore or dockside.
- Build a wire rope and chain inspection schedule into the purchase, not as an afterthought.
- Ask your supplier whether they manufacture or resell — in-house manufacture usually means faster access to spares and engineering support when something needs adjusting on site.
